irish soldiers & the victoria cross

Surgeon Major Reynolds from County Dublin won his VC at Rorkes Driflt
Since its inception in 1856, the Victoria Cross
has been awarded to 1351 individuals, a remarkably high proportion of them Irish.
The Cross itself is bronze, taken from Russsian
canon captured at Sevastapol during the Crimean war- a Maltese cross bearing the words 'Tor Valor', with the recipients name on the verso. A plain, unobtrusive medal of no intrinsive value yet one of the most coveted of all military awards.
